Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has strongly condemned the act of jungle justice that led to the alleged killing of a Fulani settler in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, Governor Ododo emphasized the need to uphold the rule of law and cautioned against individuals taking justice into their own hands.
To address the situation and prevent further unrest, the governor convened an emergency security meeting on Saturday in Lokoja, where measures were outlined to restore peace and prevent potential reprisal attacks.
The statement read: “Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has called for calm, urging the Isanlu community and Fulani settlers to work together in harmony.
He unequivocally condemned the unlawful killing and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice, he said.”
As part of the efforts to ensure accountability, Governor Ododo ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, including questioning certain traditional rulers.
One leader was suspended for alleged involvement in the case. He further urged community leaders to discourage actions that could escalate insecurity and to collaborate with law enforcement by identifying and handing over criminal elements.
The governor commended the Fulani community for exercising restraint and avoiding retaliatory actions, expressing appreciation for their continued support of his administration’s security initiatives.
The emergency meeting, attended by government officials, security agencies, and community leaders, resulted in a consensus to maintain peace and work towards long-term stability in the area.
Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning that no criminal, regardless of their background, would evade justice.
