Gunmen Kill Architect Days Before Mother’s Burial in Anambra

Tragedy struck in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Sunday, November 17, 2024, as Arc. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA), was killed by unidentified gunmen just days before his mother’s burial.

Egbuonu, a Port Harcourt-based architect, had returned to his hometown to finalize arrangements for the burial ceremony slated for November 21.

He was ambushed and critically injured in the attack, later succumbing to complications from the gunshot wounds.

The Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its General Secretary, Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu.

“It is with a painful and heavy heart that I announce the death of our brother, Arc. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu FNIA, KSJ.

“He passed away from complications after being attacked by gunmen near his hometown,” the statement read.

Egbuonu was a highly respected figure in Nigeria’s architectural community, known for his leadership and dedication.

He served as Chair of the Architectural Exhibitions and Competitions Committee and was a former Chair of the NIA Rivers State Chapter.

His death has left his family, colleagues, and the community devastated, highlighting the increasing insecurity in the region.

Authorities have launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
