The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought Sulieman Garba Bulkwang, the Director of Human Resources at the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), to court over alleged embezzlement and money laundering totaling ₦223.4 million.

Bulkwang was arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja, facing five counts of criminal diversion of funds.

The charges include allegations that he instructed consultant Umaefulem Donatus Chibueze to transfer ₦138.1 million from a ₦279.3 million payment made by the REA, fully aware the money was proceeds of unlawful activity.

Further charges include accusations of diverting ₦45 million to various accounts in July 2023.

Bulkwang denied all charges, pleading not guilty. With his defense counsel absent, EFCC prosecutor Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, urged the court to set a trial date and request the defendant’s remand.

Justice Abdulmalik ordered Bulkwang’s detention at Kuje Correctional Center, with the bail hearing scheduled for February 3, 2024.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability in public office.
