In a decisive move to tackle Nigeria’s frequent power grid collapses, the National Economic Council (NEC), has established a National Electrification Committee to implement the National Electrification Strategy and strengthen state-level participation under the Electricity Reform Act 2023.

The committee, chaired by Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, includes key governors, federal ministers, and industry stakeholders.

Their mission is to ensure equitable electricity access, affordability, and the diversification of Nigeria’s energy systems.

At the 146th NEC meeting held in Abuja and presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Shettima emphasized that electricity is “the oxygen of economic growth” and a fundamental right, not a privilege.

He called for swift action to expand energy access, empower rural communities, and drive productivity for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

NEC also acknowledged the potential of Nigeria’s creative industries as a catalyst for economic transformation.

Shettima urged stakeholders to capitalize on new technologies that amplify the global reach of Nigerian arts, music, and culture, creating jobs and revenue streams for the nation.

The Council’s decisions aim to light up homes, power businesses, and lay the foundation for Nigeria’s industrial future.
