A police officer was shot and killed by armed gunmen on Wednesday morning in the Ebem-Asaga area of Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, sparking fear and panic in the community.
The attack, which occurred around 7:30 a.m., left residents fleeing in terror.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with many abandoning their homes.
“People ran for their lives. The area is now deserted,” a local resident recounted.
This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of another attack on Sunday night, where a police officer attached to Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives for Isiala-Ngwa North/South Constituency, was killed in an ambush in Umuahia.
During the ambush, the officer, along with a colleague and a driver, was attacked by gunmen. While the driver and one officer managed to escape, the slain officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Efforts to obtain an official response from Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, are ongoing, as the community grapples with rising insecurity and fears of further attacks.
