The Federal Ministry of Education has removed Dr. Bernard Odoh as the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) and dissolved the university’s Governing Council, following accusations of procedural irregularities in Odoh’s appointment.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Folashade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations, the decision comes after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), raised concerns about violations of due process during Odoh’s selection.

ASUU had called for the dissolution of the Governing Council, citing a lack of transparency and non-adherence to established guidelines.

The Ministry’s statement noted that the Chairman of the Governing Council appointed Odoh without meeting the minimum eligibility requirements outlined in the university’s governing laws, causing significant disruption and tension within the academic community.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the actions of the dissolved Council had led to instability at the institution.

He affirmed that immediate measures were necessary to prevent further deterioration of the university’s academic and administrative structure.

To address the crisis, the Ministry announced the appointment of an Acting Vice-Chancellor to temporarily lead the university, and a new Governing Council will be established to ensure adherence to legal procedures and transparent governance in the future.

This swift intervention reflects the Ministry’s commitment to restoring order, strengthening governance at NAU, and upholding integrity within Nigeria’s higher education system.
