Nigeria has reinforced its status as a major contributor to international education in the United States, ranking seventh globally and first in Africa for student enrollment, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange.
The U.S. Embassy disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that 20,029 Nigerian students enrolled in American colleges and universities during the 2023/2024 academic year. This figure represents a 13.5% increase compared to the previous year, highlighting Nigeria’s pivotal role in global student mobility.
The report marks a historic milestone, with U.S. institutions hosting a record-breaking 1,126,690 international students—the largest number ever recorded. Nigerian students, renowned for their academic excellence, make significant contributions to graduate-level studies, with over 55% pursuing advanced degrees.
Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the fastest-growing region for international education, experiencing a 13% increase in student mobility this year, following an 18% rise in the previous academic year.
“The influx of Nigerian students underscores the strong educational ties between the U.S. and Nigeria, reinforcing the importance of exchanges that promote mutual understanding and global collaboration,” the U.S. Embassy noted.
This year’s report is particularly notable as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Open Doors Report, a critical benchmark for global educational exchange. Its release during International Education Week underscores the enduring appeal of U.S. education and the shared commitment to fostering cross-cultural learning and leadership development.
Published annually by the Institute of International Education in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State, the Open Doors Report continues to highlight the transformative power of international education in shaping the next generation of global leaders.
