Two people lost their lives, while a soldier and 11 other passengers sustained injuries in a road accident near Chikara village along the Abuja-Lokoja Highway on Sunday morning.
The crash, which occurred around 10:40 a.m., involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME 919 YX.
The bus was en route from Lagos to Kano when a rear tyre burst, causing the vehicle to somersault and crash into a ditch.
Eyewitnesses reported that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) from the Abaji unit command arrived promptly at the scene.
They evacuated the injured passengers, including the soldier, and transported them to Abaji General Hospital.
An FRSC official involved in the rescue operation confirmed the incident, attributing the crash to tyre burst, overloading, and excessive speeding.
“The two deceased victims have been deposited at the Abaji General Hospital morgue, while the 11 injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital,” the official stated.
The FRSC has reiterated its warning to motorists to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and avoid overloading and speeding to prevent similar tragedies.
