President Bola Tinubu has submitted the names of three nominees for the position of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to the Senate for confirmation.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this announcement during Tuesday’s plenary session, underscoring the significance of these appointments in strengthening the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Senate has referred the nominations to its Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission for review.
The committee is tasked with conducting background checks and screening the nominees before presenting its report for further legislative action.
While the identities of the three nominees were not disclosed during the plenary session, these appointments are expected to fill vacant REC positions within INEC, ensuring the Commission’s preparedness for upcoming elections.
This latest move follows President Tinubu’s nomination of Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi, a legal practitioner, as REC for Ondo State two weeks ago.
The new nominations reflect the administration’s efforts to reinforce INEC’s leadership structure, ensuring the Commission’s efficiency in overseeing elections.
Resident Electoral Commissioners play a crucial role in managing elections at the state level, overseeing the preparation, conduct, and conclusion of all electoral processes.
These appointments are viewed as an essential step in aligning INEC’s operations with the administration’s broader governance objectives.
The Senate’s eventual confirmation of the nominees will be closely scrutinized, given the vital role of transparent and credible leadership in ensuring the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
