The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to comprehensive judicial reforms as part of its Renewed Hope Agenda, urging stronger collaboration among stakeholders in Nigeria’s justice sector.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, made this call during the Network of Justice Sector Reform Teams (JSRT), Conference held on Tuesday in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Speaking at the event, organized with the support of the EU-funded Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme by International IDEA, Fagbemi emphasized the critical role of justice reforms in driving socio-economic development and strengthening the rule of law.
“The reform of the justice sector is essential to sustainable development and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria,” Fagbemi said, highlighting key initiatives such as the Presidential Committee for the Review of the Laws of the Federation and the National Policy on Justice.
According to him, these policies aim to resolve systemic challenges, foster inter-agency collaboration, and enhance the administration of justice.
The conference convened representatives from the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, civil society, and legal professionals. It builds on progress made during the April 2024 National Summit on Justice.
Fagbemi commended development partners, including the British Council and Partners West Africa Nigeria, for supporting justice reforms that tackle issues such as reducing recidivism and decongesting correctional facilities.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, who officially opened the conference, highlighted its importance in the context of judicial reforms led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“This conference couldn’t have come at a better time as the President mobilizes efforts to overhaul the judicial system for better outcomes,” the governor said.
He expressed confidence in the JSRT’s ability to craft innovative solutions to challenges facing the justice sector, stressing that reforms are crucial to restoring public trust in the judiciary.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice and good governance, praising Fagbemi’s efforts in advancing legal reforms and lauding the hospitality of Kwara State.
The conference serves as a vital platform for addressing systemic challenges, fostering dialogue, and formulating actionable steps to strengthen Nigeria’s justice system and promote a more equitable society.
