The remains of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, were laid to rest yesterday at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja, in a solemn ceremony attended by President Bola Tinubu, top government officials, and military leaders.

President Tinubu, joined by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abass, and other dignitaries, led the nation in paying last respects to the distinguished officer.

The event also witnessed the participation of service chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps, and Lagbaja’s widow, Mariya, who received a posthumous Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) honour on his behalf.

In his tribute, President Tinubu praised Lagbaja as a “soldier’s soldier” and “a rare gem,” whose life epitomized patriotism, professionalism, and selflessness. “He was a trusted advisor, a man of prudent action, and a soldier whose legacy of service will be cherished forever,” Tinubu said.

The President recounted Lagbaja’s transformative leadership in the fight against terrorism and banditry, his unwavering commitment to soldiers’ welfare, and his passion for clearing longstanding benefits for families of fallen troops.

“As we mourn, we celebrate his courage, sacrifice, and leadership,” Tinubu remarked, urging the Armed Forces to honor Lagbaja’s memory by upholding patriotism and dedication.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s passing marks the end of a remarkable military career but solidifies his place in the annals of Nigeria’s military history as a “General among generals.”
