Ondo State takes center stage today as 1,793,914 registered voters across 18 local governments decide their next governor in a high-stakes election marred by controversies, security concerns, and allegations of vote buying.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cleared 17 political parties to contest the poll, with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerging as the frontrunners.

The Labour Party, once considered a strong contender, faces setbacks following a recent Court of Appeal ruling that disqualified Olusola Ebiseni and reinstated Olorunfemi Festus as the party’s authentic candidate barely 24 hours before the election.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Adebukola Banjoko, has fueled tensions, leaving Labour Party supporters scrambling to regain footing.

Despite this, the party’s state youth leader, Hon. Samuel Boniface, claimed he rejected a ₦100 million bribe from PDP stakeholders attempting to collapse the Labour Party’s structure. “I can’t sell my conscience or betray my followers,” he affirmed.

Concerns over voter safety persist, with reports of armed thugs attacking PDP members in Idanre and Owo, where over 70 people were killed in 2022. At least six people were hospitalized after a recent clash, raising fears of electoral violence.

In response, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has deployed over 22,000 officers to ensure security during the polls.

The stakes are high as Ondo’s electorate seeks to determine its future leadership amidst allegations of cash inducements and political maneuvering.

With both major parties vying for supremacy and the Labour Party struggling to reclaim relevance, today’s outcome could shape the state’s political landscape for years to come.

All eyes remain on Ondo as voters make their voices heard.
