Miss South Africa Withdraws from Miss Universe Over Health Concerns

Mia le Roux, the trailblazing 28-year-old who made history as the first deaf woman crowned Miss South Africa, has withdrawn from the Miss Universe pageant due to health concerns.

Her decision was announced as she prepared to compete alongside 120 contestants at the prestigious finale in Mexico.

“This has been an incredibly tough decision for me,” Mia said in a statement. “I know how much hope and expectation has been placed on me, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to represent South Africa. But after much reflection, I’ve decided to focus on my health and recovery so I can continue to serve my country with strength and determination.”

The Miss South Africa organisation expressed its unwavering support for Mia, emphasizing that her health and well-being are their “utmost priority.”

While the specifics of her health condition remain undisclosed, the organization praised her grace and courage, assuring continued support throughout her recovery.

Mia’s journey has been nothing short of inspiration. Diagnosed with profound hearing loss as a baby, she overcame immense challenges, learning to speak after years of therapy with the aid of a cochlear implant.

Her crowning moment in August was a symbol of perseverance, even as the pageant faced controversies, including online trolling of another finalist over her Nigerian heritage.

Despite stepping back from Miss Universe, Mia remains a beacon of hope and resilience.

She had hoped to use the global platform to celebrate South Africa’s diversity and amplify her voice for inclusion. As she prioritizes her recovery, Mia’s legacy as a trailblazer continues to inspire her country and beyond.
