The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed plans to demolish shanties across Abuja, prioritizing security and public safety in the capital.

Speaking to residents of a shanty settlement in Wuye on Sunday, Wike emphasized the risks posed by unregistered occupants in such informal settlements, especially around sensitive infrastructure like railway lines.

Wike expressed concern over the potential security threats that these areas represent, noting, “We have identified areas that pose security threats. If we allow this kind of people to be here, it is a security threat to the operation of our trains, and no right-thinking government will allow that.”

Despite possible opposition from civil society groups, Wike stated he would not be swayed by “blackmail, intimidation, or threats.”

He directed the Wuye residents to appoint representatives to meet with the FCT Ministry on Tuesday to discuss possible assistance.

In response, community representative Abba Garu acknowledged the temporary nature of their structures and appealed for government support in securing alternative housing.
