Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja has passed away at age 56.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced his death through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirming that General Lagbaja died on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness.
Lagbaja, who was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, dedicated his life to military service, joining the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 and rising through the ranks to become a respected leader.
Over his distinguished career, he led key operations across Nigeria, including missions in Benue, Borno, the Southeast, Kaduna, and Niger States, and earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Lagbaja’s family, honoring his unwavering dedication to the nation’s security.
Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
