Suspected gunmen invaded Amal Pepple Estate, located off Kiyami village road near Abuja Centenary City along the Lugbe/Airport Road axis in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in a kidnapping attempt for ransom.
The incident reportedly took place early Monday morning.
Eyewitnesses describe a scene of chaos as the previously quiet estate was thrown into panic when sporadic gunfire erupted around 12:15 a.m., jolting residents awake. Gunshots rang out for hours, shattering the peace before a combined team of estate security and police reinforcements repelled the assailants, thwarting their attempt to abduct more victims.
According to a witness, a young man narrowly escaped being kidnapped but suffered serious machete injuries to his right arm. Unfortunately, his mother and another individual were seized by the attackers.
This incident occurred just five days after a similar assault on ACO Estate in the nearby Sabon-Lugbe area, where one gateman was killed and two residents were abducted.
In the ACO Estate attack, which happened last Wednesday, a mother and daughter were taken, and one casualty was recorded when suspected kidnappers stormed the area.
With two violent incidents in five days along the Lugbe/Airport Road axis, the attacks have raised alarm about the effectiveness of the security framework in the Federal Capital Territory.
Abuja residents are now urging FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and heads of security agencies to step up efforts to tackle the worsening security situation.
