The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has pledged immediate action on a critical report addressing the welfare of young detainees in police custody, following a recent remand and arraignment of several young individuals on November 1st.
The report made available by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Force Headquarters,
Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, mnipr, mipra, fCAI, through a Press Release was received today in Glasgow, where the IGP is currently attending the Interpol General Assembly.
The IGP, who had initially commissioned the investigation during his participation in the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation meeting in Algiers, expressed strong commitment to examining all findings and addressing any procedural flaws identified.
The report aims to enhance detention protocols, especially those involving minors, and reinforce child-sensitive standards within police facilities.
In a decisive move to bolster professionalism in handling juvenile cases, the IGP has summoned Divisional Crime Investigators (DCs CID) and Heads of Investigation Units across Nigeria to a special conference and workshop scheduled for November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center, Jabi.
This workshop will focus on child-friendly investigative approaches and improving overall care standards for young detainees.
Reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to legal and ethical standards, the Force emphasized its dedication to accountability and fairness, particularly concerning vulnerable populations.
The IGP’s proactive stance signals a strengthened resolve to protect young detainees’ rights, ensuring Nigeria’s compliance with international best practices in law enforcement.
