In a groundbreaking push for sustainable transport, the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, is set to open a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion center in Ilorin, advancing Nigeria’s green energy goals.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Jimoh Shaykh-Lukman announced the initiative at KWASU’s business school, where he showcased four vehicles converted from traditional fuel to CNG and hybrid systems, spearheaded by the university’s engineering team.

The university has also inked a deal with leading Chinese firms—Zhejiang Sinray Electronics and Jiaxing Keyuan Electronics Company Limited—to supply high-quality CNG kits.

“This partnership guarantees safety and reliability in our conversions,” Shaykh-Lukman emphasized, aiming to make the technology widely accessible.

Beyond CNG, KWASU has also pioneered electric vehicle conversions, initially converting two vehicles and presenting them to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who lauded the university’s eco-commitment.

The governor responded by transferring 22 Kwara Express vehicles to KWASU for conversion.

Highlighting the economic and environmental impact, Chief Technologist Abdulazeez Akande noted that CNG can offer up to 80% savings over petrol.

“In just seven weeks, KWASU saved N840,000 by using CNG in staff vehicles,” he added, underscoring the potential of CNG to relieve fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions.
