In a major step toward energy independence, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has issued operational licences to 14 electricity vendors, aiming to enhance local power generation, distribution, and metering.

The move, announced Sunday, aligns with the 2023 Electricity Law Enactments empowering states to oversee their energy needs.

Currently receiving just 20-25 megawatts, the state faces a severe shortfall against its 120-megawatt demand.

This initiative empowers three distribution companies, four generation firms, two mini-grid providers, and five metering asset companies to bridge this gap.

Addressing stakeholders, Infrastructure Commissioner Prof. Mobolaji Aluko highlighted the transformative potential of these licences under the 2023 Electricity Law, allowing states to independently manage their power needs.

Traditional rulers and industry leaders praised the governor’s proactive approach, while Ekiti residents anticipate a more reliable energy future to fuel economic growth and community well-being.
