In response to public outcry, the Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has taken decisive action regarding the recent detention of 52 children, arrested on August 3, 2024, during the End Bad Governance protests in Kano and Kaduna.
The Ministry voiced grave concern over their treatment, affirming its dedication to the children’s rights under Nigeria’s Constitution, the Child Rights Act, and international conventions.
In a show of commitment, Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim visited the detention facility late at night, meeting with the children to offer comfort and hear their concerns.
She has since initiated discussions with authorities to ensure the children’s safety and to expedite their cases through juvenile courts, as mandated by law.
The Ministry’s statement confirmed ongoing efforts to collaborate with the Ministry of Justice, judiciary, and correctional bodies to uphold the children’s rights.
Plans include psychological counseling, social support, and educational opportunities post-release, aiming for the children’s full reintegration.
Additionally, President has instructed the Attorney General to prioritize the review of these cases, underscoring Nigeria’s dedication to justice and child protection.
The Ministry reassured the public of its ongoing advocacy, pledging to safeguard the children’s welfare and secure a just resolution.
