President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is being urged to immediately release 76 individuals, mostly minors, detained for participating in the recent #EndBadGovernance protest.
The detainees, who have reportedly spent over 80 days in police custody, include a 15-year-old boy who collapsed in court before proceedings could begin, causing the judge to suspend the session.
The Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA), through its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko condemned the prolonged detention of the minors, calling it a violation of their fundamental rights and a blight on Nigeria’s international image.
HURIWA emphasized, “Nigeria has been presented as a nation without respect for children’s rights, despite commitments to abolish torture.”
The group urged President Tinubu, “As a parent, consider the lasting global disgrace this case brings upon Nigeria. Act swiftly to release, rehabilitate, and support these minors, enabling them to reintegrate into society through education and vocational training.”
