President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that Nigeria is positioning itself to become a major fish exporter as part of its strategic push in the blue economy sector.

Speaking at the 39th Annual National Conference and General Meeting of the Fisheries Society of Nigeria, the president, represented by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the country’s goals of self-sufficiency in fish production and expanding its role in the global fish market.

“The establishment of this ministry marks the beginning of a new era for the fisheries and aquaculture sub-sector,” Oyetola conveyed on behalf of the president. “In line with Mr. President’s vision, the ministry is committed to achieving self-sufficiency in fish production and positioning Nigeria as a leading exporter of fish and fisheries products.”

The Ministry’s vision, centered on fisheries and aquaculture, is a core element of Nigeria’s broader Blue Economy initiative. Its strategic goals focus on sustainably increasing fish production and harnessing the full range of marine resources.

According to Tinubu, the fisheries sub-sector holds vast potential to enhance food production, create jobs, and foster sustainable development across Nigeria’s coastal and inland waters, ultimately contributing to long-term prosperity and security for future generations.
