Arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje on Wednesday, for Alleged Assault on a Bolt Driver, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South in the House of Representatives has been granted a N500,000 bail.
Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted Ikwechegh bail at N500,000, requiring two sureties with valid residency proofs within the court’s jurisdiction.
The lawmaker, who was charged with allegations of assault, abuse of office, and issuing threats against the Bolt driver at his Abuja residence, pleaded not guilty to the charges filed by the Nigerian Police Force.
The Prosecuting counsel Mr. A. Umar requested a trial date, while Ikwechegh’s defense team sought bail, arguing that the offenses are bailable and emphasizing the lawmaker’s constitutional right to presumption of innocence.
The case is set to proceed on November 8.
However, the incident sparked by Ikwechegh’s alleged threats to make the driver “disappear without trace,” has generated public backlash.
In response, Ikwechegh issued a public apology, but the driver’s counsel, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, signaled continued pursuit of justice, promising an intense courtroom showdown.
