MTN Unveils Eco-Friendly Biodegradable SIM Cards in Abuja

Published

on

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, a leading ICT company, has launched its new biodegradable, paper-based SIM cards in a move towards environmental sustainability. This initiative aligns with MTN’s Project Zero goals, which aim to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

The eco-friendly SIM cards, made from biodegradable materials, mark a shift away from traditional plastic-based SIMs. These new cards are designed to break down naturally, reducing the environmental impact associated with plastic waste. By promoting circularity and responsible product lifecycle management, MTN is taking a bold step in addressing plastic pollution and supporting a greener planet.

In addition to environmental benefits, the transition to biodegradable SIM cards reflects MTN’s commitment to local partnerships. This project is driven by a local supplier, highlighting MTN’s efforts to boost economic growth and empower local businesses through sustainable collaboration.

Tobe Okigbo, MTN’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, emphasized the significance of the initiative: “Our new eco-friendly SIM cards are part of our continuous commitment to environmental responsibility. We aim to reduce waste, support local vendors, and integrate sustainability into both our operations and the everyday lives of Nigerians.”

Adekemi Adisa, General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value, echoed this sentiment, adding, “Our focus on the people and their environment drives our innovation. By launching these recyclable SIM cards, we encourage customers to adopt eco-friendly choices, reduce waste, and contribute to a more sustainable future for Nigeria.”

The biodegradable SIM cards, when compared to conventional plastic-based Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) SIMs, offer several advantages. They decompose naturally, reducing waste pollution and lowering carbon emissions during both production and disposal. This move not only tackles the problem of plastic SIM cards filling landfills or being incinerated but also eliminates the limited recycling options typically available for plastic materials.

The launch of these eco-friendly SIMs is part of MTN’s broader “Doing for the Planet” initiative, which prioritizes environmental stewardship through responsible and sustainable waste management. The pilot phase of the biodegradable SIM cards is currently available at select MTN stores in Lagos and Abuja, with plans to expand distribution nationwide.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has approved the participation of licensed Bureau De Change (BDC), operators in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), allowing each BDC to purchase up to $150,000 weekly.

The approval was contained in a circular dated February 10, 2026, signed by the Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. Musa Nakorji, and addressed to authorised dealer banks and the general public.

The CBN said the move is aimed at improving foreign exchange liquidity in the retail segment of the market and meeting the legitimate needs of end users, amid a widening gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates.

Under the new arrangement, licensed BDCs can access foreign exchange from the NFEM through any authorised dealer bank of their choice at the prevailing exchange rate.

The apex bank directed banks to carry out full Know-Your-Customer (KYC), and due diligence checks on BDC clients before selling foreign exchange to them.

It also imposed reporting and transparency requirements, mandating BDCs to submit returns electronically to the CBN.

In addition, the bank prohibited third-party transactions and limited cash settlement to a maximum of 25 per cent of each transaction.
