The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern over recurring cases of extortion and high-handedness involving members of the Nigeria Police Force. He made his stance clear during an address at the IGP’s Conference with Senior Police Officers held in Abuja, attended by Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police, and other top officials.
In his remarks, the IGP charged senior officers to intensify supervision at all levels and ensure that police personnel adhere strictly to the highest standards of professionalism. He emphasized the need for accountability, urging officers to demonstrate integrity when performing their duties.
IGP Egbetokun directed the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, Complaint Response Unit (CRU), and other disciplinary bodies to conduct routine checks on police activities across the country. These units will be tasked with identifying and addressing misconduct among officers.
Furthermore, the IGP issued a stern warning against officers who misuse his name to extort money from citizens, describing such behavior as unacceptable. He stressed that the force would not tolerate any form of exploitation, reiterating his commitment to upholding ethical standards in the Nigeria Police Force.
Egbetokun’s statement reflects ongoing efforts to reform the police and restore public trust, as citizens have often raised concerns about misconduct and abuse by some officers.
