As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council gears up to inaugurate a Credentials Committee on Saturday, 19th October 2024, to oversee its forthcoming leadership elections, the Make A Difference Initiative (MAD) has called for a fair and transparent electoral process to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
MAD Initiative, a prominent advocacy group known for promoting justice, equity, and good governance, emphasized the need for Abuja-based journalists to lead by example in organizing free, fair, and credible elections. The group urged that the process be devoid of manipulation, rancor, or crises, which have often marred political transitions in the broader Nigerian political landscape.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr. Lemmy Ughegbe, MAD Initiative stressed that the NUJ elections provide an opportunity for journalists in the Federal Capital Territory to demonstrate that credible elections are achievable. The group highlighted that this goal could only be realized through leadership committed to the collective interests of the union, safeguarding the rights of its members, and resisting undue influence from self-serving individuals or external groups.
“It is imperative that the leadership of the NUJ FCT Council creates a level playing field where all candidates and voting members can participate freely, without intimidation or bias,” the statement read. “Abuja journalists should set a high standard that others, especially politicians, can emulate.”
The group placed particular responsibility on the incumbent NUJ FCT Chairman, Patrick Osaretin Osadebamwen, and his executive team, urging them to ensure that the election process reflects the core values of transparency, accountability, and fairness. MAD Initiative urged the leadership to seize this moment to leave a lasting legacy by managing the transition with integrity.
“This is a critical moment for the NUJ FCT Council,” Dr. Ughegbe added. “It is our hope that Osadebamwen will manage this process with transparency and commitment to the union’s values, allowing it to be a beacon of democracy within the profession.”
MAD Initiative also called on NUJ National President, Comrade Christopher Ikechukwu Isiguzo, to actively monitor the process and provide timely intervention if needed to uphold the integrity of the elections. The group underscored the importance of ensuring that any irregularities or concerns are swiftly addressed to maintain confidence in the process.
