Nigeria’s U-17 Women’s Football Team, the Flamingos, kicked off their 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign in style, defeating New Zealand 4-1 in their opening match. This impressive victory earned them their first three points in the tournament .
The Flamingos dominated the game from the start, scoring their first goal in just two minutes through Shakirat Moshood . Khadijat Adegoke doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 13th minute with a powerful shot that slipped through the hands of New Zealand goalkeeper Brooke Neary.
Faridat Abdulwahab scored the third goal in the 28th minute, and Taiwo Afolabi sealed the win with a header in the 55th minute.
New Zealand finally got on the scoreboard in the 60th minute with a goal from Hannah Saxon.
Despite the consolation goal, Nigeria’s superior possession, territory, and shots on goal made the difference .
