The Federal Government of Nigeria has downplayed concerns about a petition submitted by Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, seeking separation from Nigeria. Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, announced the petition’s delivery to the UK Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street on behalf of Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, leader of the Yoruba Nation movement.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the UK government hasn’t endorsed the petition. British High Commissioner Richard Montgomery assured that the UK doesn’t involve itself in another country’s sovereign affairs and has previously rejected similar petitions.

Montgomery explained that allowing petition deliveries at 10 Downing Street is standard practice, but this doesn’t imply endorsement. However, the Nigerian government summoned Montgomery to address the misleading reports.

The Yoruba Nation movement seeks independence from Nigeria, with Prof. Adebanji Akintoye at its helm. Sunday Igboho’s petition is part of this effort, but its impact appears minimal given the UK’s stance.
