The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has given the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) 48 hours to clean up the city.
Chief Felix Obuah, the AMMC Coordinator, issued the directive on Monday after an emergency meeting with AEPB management and contractors responsible for refuse evacuation in the city. The meeting followed his inspection of waste collection efforts in the Asokoro District.
Obuah expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of refuse removal in the district, emphasizing that the capital city should serve as a model of cleanliness for the entire country. He directed AEPB’s Director, Mr. Osi Braimah, to ensure Asokoro is thoroughly cleaned within the next 48 hours, with efforts extending to other key districts, including Guzape, Maitama, the Central Business District, and Wuse.
He also ordered the immediate recall of casual workers to speed up waste evacuation across Abuja.
“I am tired of receiving calls from residents complaining about how dirty the city has become,” Obuah said. “Today, I personally inspected major areas of the city, and what I saw was an eyesore. Contractors are not doing their jobs, and AEPB must act swiftly to address this.”
Obuah warned that if the contractors fail to meet the 48-hour deadline, they will face consequences from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, who is reportedly displeased with the situation.
He stressed that the beauty of any city is tied to its cleanliness, adding that Abuja should not only be clean but also set a standard for other cities in Nigeria.
In response, AEPB Director Osi Braimah assured Obuah that the board would comply with the directive and address the situation promptly.
