The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward establishing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, following the first reading of a bill on Thursday. The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others, aims to create a university focused on promoting the study of Nigerian languages and cultures.
According to the bill, the university would provide educational opportunities to all, regardless of race, creed, gender, or political beliefs, offering academic and professional programs in Nigerian languages and cultures. The institution is designed to produce graduates who are socially mature and capable of using Nigerian languages for national development.
The bill also outlines provisions for regular presidential oversight of the university and grants the president the authority to remove council members under certain conditions. If passed, the university will collaborate with other institutions to enhance the teaching, research, and development of Nigerian languages.
The bill is expected to proceed to a second reading in the coming weeks.
