Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating banditry, while acknowledging that the ultimate fate of the state’s security lies beyond human efforts, resting in God’s hands.
Speaking to journalists at the State House in Abuja following a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Lawal emphasized the importance of divine intervention in the face of persistent insecurity. “We are doing the best that we can to make sure we secure the lives and properties of our people, but it’s in the hands of God,” he said.
His remarks came in the wake of a recent violent attack on the Tsafe-Funtua Road in Zamfara, where bandits killed a police officer and abducted several people, including an expatriate and construction workers. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the security situation in the state, which has been plagued by banditry for over a decade.
Despite gains made by security forces, including the neutralization of several notorious terrorist leaders, Zamfara remains one of the epicenters of banditry in Nigeria. Rural communities, in particular, continue to suffer from mass abductions, killings, and relentless attacks that have displaced thousands of residents.
Governor Lawal acknowledged that while the state government has made progress, the road to lasting peace remains challenging. “The reality is that the insecurity in Zamfara State has existed for the past 12 years, and as a responsible government, we are tackling it head-on,” he stated. However, he cautioned that the situation is complex and cannot be resolved overnight. “We are doing the best that we can… but it’s an ongoing process.”
Lawal refrained from divulging specific security measures being implemented but emphasized that steps are being taken to improve the situation. He noted that significant progress had been made, including the elimination of key bandit leaders, which has helped to weaken the operational capacity of criminal groups in the region.
Despite the efforts, the governor stressed the importance of community resilience and cooperation with security forces. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and work hand in hand with law enforcement agencies to protect their communities. Lawal also called for sustained prayers, noting that the challenges facing Zamfara require both strategic interventions and divine guidance.
In addition to security efforts, the state government has initiated various programs aimed at addressing the root causes of banditry, including poverty, lack of education, and unemployment. Governor Lawal highlighted the importance of these socio-economic initiatives, which he believes are critical to curbing the cycle of violence in the long term.
