N5bn Grant Sparks Outrage Among Edo Youths

Beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s NG- CARES 3.2 grants in Edo State are outraged over allegations of underpayment. Some recipients, who wish to remain anonymous, claim that Edojobs, one of the program’s coordinating agencies, embezzled part of the N5 billion meant for qualified applicants. These individuals applied for the N500,000 grant but were shocked to receive only N50,000 or N100,000.

The beneficiaries argue that other states are providing up to N5 million to recipients, making Edo State’s allocation seem inconsistent. However, Joseph Ogunleye, Head of Monitoring and Evaluation for Edo Cares, refutes these allegations. He explains that grant amounts range from N50,000 to N500,000, depending on the business size and requirements.

According to Ogunleye, the N50,000 grants are intended for petty businesses, while larger enterprises with more staff may receive up to N500,000. The program received over 25,000 applications, with more than 3,000 beneficiaries, including those receiving IT equipment and POS services.

The NG-CARES program aims to support vulnerable households and micro and small enterprises (MSEs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It operates through three result areas: increasing social transfers and livelihood support, improving food security, and facilitating MSE recovery. The program’s implementation is monitored through a robust platform designed by the Bank of Industry, ensuring transparency and accountability.
