The nationwide protest scheduled for today has officially commenced in the Federal Capital Territory, marking a significant moment for citizens seeking to voice their grievances regarding the ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria. The October 1 protest, dubbed #FearlessInOctober, is a continuation of the earlier #EndBadGovernance demonstrations that took place from August 1 to 10. These earlier protests arose in response to the severe economic hardships faced by many Nigerians, sparking widespread calls for government accountability and reform.
Protesters began gathering as early as 7 a.m. at the bustling Utako market in the Utako area of the FCT. They have since filled the streets with their chants and placards, expressing their discontent with the current state of governance. The demonstration is characterized by a diverse group of participants, including young activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens from various backgrounds, all united in their demand for change.
Damilare Adenola, the Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, addressed the crowd, highlighting the pervasive hardship in the country. He attributed these challenges to the policies implemented by the Federal Government, emphasizing the urgent need for a shift in governance. “We can no longer sit idly by while our people suffer,” Adenola declared, rallying participants to stand firm in their resolve. “It’s time for our voices to be heard and for those in power to understand the gravity of our situation.”
As the protest continues, participants are expected to march through key areas of the city, calling attention to issues such as rising inflation, unemployment, and inadequate public services. The movement seeks not only to spotlight the current economic crisis but also to advocate for a transparent government that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens.
