Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has warned that Nigeria is on the verge of a one-party dictatorship. Atiku made this assertion in his message marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration.
In his statement, Atiku urged politicians of integrity to take action to reclaim Nigeria’s democracy. He expressed concern about the weakness of opposition parties and the ruling party’s manipulation of internal processes, suggesting it was rendering the opposition ineffectual.
“Nigeria teeters on the brink of a one-party dictatorship, and it is incumbent upon all politicians and statesmen of integrity to rise and reclaim our democracy from the encroaching shadows of oppression,” Atiku said.
He added that despite numerous challenges, the resilience of patriotic citizens and support from international allies has helped Nigeria maintain its democratic structure. Reflecting on the 64th anniversary, Atiku highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s long-standing democratic governance.
The former Vice President also lamented the declining credibility of electoral processes, which he attributed to the influence of the ruling class.
