Ex-Gov Bello Seeks Tinubu’s Intervention Amid Showdown With EFCC

The Media Office of former Kogi State Governor, Alh Yahaya Bello, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of engaging in a politically motivated campaign against the ex-governor. They claim the EFCC’s recent actions are driven by personal and political interests rather than a genuine fight against corruption. This development comes after the EFCC declared Bello wanted and subsequently arraigned him on 19-count charges bordering on money laundering to the tune of N80,246,470,088.88.

Bello’s media office questions the EFCC’s seriousness, wondering why they didn’t take him in when he voluntarily appeared at their office accompanied by his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, and other high-profile personalities. They describe the EFCC’s actions as an “embarrassment” and express concerns over the agency’s integrity.

The EFCC’s move has sparked controversy, with some civil society organizations and activists urging President Bola Tinubu to caution the agency against using its powers for political purposes. Northern groups have also sought Tinubu’s intervention in the matter.

It’s worth noting that Bello’s immunity from arrest and prosecution ended with his tenure as governor, and no court can confer life immunity on a former governor in Nigeria. The EFCC’s actions may be seen as a necessary step in holding public officials accountable for their actions. However, the allegations of political motivation and bias warrant closer examination to ensure the fight against corruption remains impartial.
