The Federal Government has expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their perseverance amid the ongoing economic challenges, reassuring them that their sacrifices will eventually yield positive outcomes. This statement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press conference held by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary on Thursday.

Idris acknowledged the difficulties faced by Nigerians but remained optimistic, stating, “The journey has been tough, but surely there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our sacrifices will not be in vain.”

The press briefing was attended by key government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Finance Minister Wale Edun, and Works Minister Senator Dave Umahi.

In his address, Idris reflected on Nigeria’s progress since gaining independence in 1960, noting that the country has grown into a leading force on the African continent despite facing numerous political and economic challenges. He praised Nigeria’s resilience and emphasized that the country’s unbroken democracy for over 25 years is a testament to the Nigerian people’s commitment to freedom and democratic values.

The minister credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration with initiating transformative reforms aimed at correcting past mistakes and repositioning Nigeria as an economic powerhouse. He highlighted key achievements of the administration, such as local government autonomy, foreign exchange stabilization, tax reforms, and efforts to attract investment in the oil and gas sector.

One of the significant reforms, according to Idris, is the transition from fossil fuels to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles and machinery. He noted that this shift, following the removal of the petroleum subsidy, has reduced transportation costs by up to 60% while creating jobs and attracting both local and foreign investments.

Idris also pointed to the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) under the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act 2024, as part of the government’s efforts to ease access to tertiary education. Additionally, the new Consumer Credit Corporation will provide access to low-cost and flexible consumer credit.

Addressing Nigerians directly, Idris said, “Let me now use this opportunity to thank Nigerians for your patience and resilience in this very difficult period in the evolution of our economy. The journey has been tough but surely there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our sacrifices will not be in vain.”

He concluded by urging Nigerians to stay united and focused on building a stable and prosperous country. “Together, we will build a nation that will be the pride of every black man on the planet,” he said.
