In a swift response to a viral social media video accusing officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service of misconduct related to popular social media personality Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board has taken decisive action. Several senior officers have been suspended pending further investigation into their alleged infractions.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary to the Board, on Thursday, detailing the suspensions of key officials. The list includes:
- Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kiri-kiri, Lagos State.
- Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kiri-kiri, Lagos State.
These suspensions follow serious allegations concerning inappropriate conduct and violation of protocols, particularly in relation to Bobrisky’s time in custody. The specific nature of the infractions in this case remains under investigation.
In addition to the Bobrisky-linked case, other officers have also been suspended for unrelated offenses. ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, an officer stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate out of the facility to an undisclosed location, violating custodial procedures.
In yet another case, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, faces suspension after allegations surfaced that he had received money on behalf of an inmate, an act in direct violation of correctional service regulations.
The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board emphasized that these suspensions are part of efforts to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations. “The suspension of these officers is necessary to ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation,” the Board stated.
Furthermore, the Board assured the public that the investigation’s findings will be made available once the process is completed, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the integrity of the Nigerian Correctional Service and maintaining discipline within its ranks.
