A Federal High Court in Kano on Wednesday dismissed the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s application seeking to stop the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from conducting the local government elections.
The APC, along with Hon. Aminu Aliyu Tiga, had filed a motion ex parte on September 20, asking Justice Simon Amobeda to grant an interim injunction halting the upcoming elections across the 44 local government areas of Kano State. The plaintiffs sought a court order to maintain the status quo and suspend all preparations for the polls until the motion on notice was resolved.
In response, Justice Amobeda rejected the APC’s request for an interim injunction. However, the court did permit APC to notify KANSIEC and the other defendants of all legal processes and ordered that the hearing for the substantive case commence within five days of the service of the court’s originating process to the defendants.
The judge adjourned the hearing to October 4, 2024, emphasizing the need for an accelerated process and cautioning all parties against any actions that could prejudice the case.
Earlier, Justice Ado Maaji of the Kano State High Court had granted an injunction restraining the APC, PDP, NNPP, and 16 other recognized political parties from interfering with KANSIEC’s statutory role in organizing the local government elections.
