The United States has lauded the people of Edo State for their largely peaceful conduct during the governorship election held on September 21. U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., expressed this in a statement on Tuesday, September 24, highlighting the significance of maintaining democratic standards in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Ambassador Mills reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting free, fair, and transparent elections in Nigeria, praising the democratic spirit displayed by Edo voters. “The U.S. Mission in Nigeria commends the people of Edo and calls for continued calm following the announcement of results,” Mills said. He also acknowledged the efforts of Governor Godwin Obaseki in advocating for peace and urged all stakeholders to respect established legal procedures for challenging election outcomes.

Mills emphasized that electoral integrity is key to sustaining public confidence in democracy, adding that the United States will continue to monitor developments closely. “Transparency and due process are crucial to maintaining public trust in any democratic system,” the Ambassador noted.

In addition, the statement urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders to remain steadfast in upholding the rule of law, ensuring that any electoral disputes are resolved within the boundaries of legal frameworks.

While the election drew widespread attention due to its competitive nature, the peaceful conduct of voters was a positive reflection of Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape. The United States, according to Ambassador Mills, will remain an active partner in promoting democratic values in Nigeria, contributing to strengthening its institutions.
