Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has announced that his administration is actively working on implementing a new minimum wage for civil servants. He made this disclosure on Saturday during the grand finale of the 14th convocation ceremony of Osun State University at the institution’s main campus in Osogbo.
Governor Adeleke acknowledged the challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidies, which have further strained workers in the state. He assured public employees that his government is taking measures to alleviate the impact, including the introduction of the new minimum wage.
“We are working on the modalities for the implementation of the newly approved minimum wage. This is part of our commitment to mitigating the impact of recent economic changes on workers in the state,” the governor said.
He also emphasized his administration’s dedication to the development of Osun State University. Governor Adeleke highlighted several initiatives, such as completing an office complex at the Isale-Osun campus to enhance the university’s health program accreditations and supporting the construction of an ultra-modern Anatomy Complex, which was commissioned earlier in the day.
“We have also prioritised the construction of roads leading to the student area at Sasha Market and other campuses of our university,” Adeleke added.
He further mentioned that his government had promptly paid a year’s arrears to university staff and provided palliative allowances to all workers. He reassured that the new minimum wage plans were underway.
The governor urged university staff and students to maintain peace and work toward the continued progress of the institution. He also advised parents and guardians to continue supporting their children as they transition to new stages in their lives.
“The progress of this citadel of learning can only be sustained through a peaceful and harmonious environment. Let us avoid unnecessary rancour and acrimony. Instead, focus on the common goal of advancing this great institution,” he stated.
Earlier in the event, Osun State University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Clement Adebooye, expressed confidence that the graduates were well-prepared to contribute to public service, the economy, and the global workforce.
