The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is gearing up to participate in the local council election across 27 local government areas this Saturday, September 21. However, they’re also sounding the alarm about potential election rigging by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP claims that the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has disregarded its own guidelines, which they believe is a clear sign of an attempt to manipulate the election. Specifically, the PDP Chairman, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, is condemning ISIEC for not publishing the list of voters in the wards as required by law. Instead, the commission allegedly demanded N50,000 and N200,000 from PDP’s Councillorship and Chairmanship candidates, respectively.
Despite these concerns, the PDP is reaffirming its commitment to participating in the election, but only if ISIEC adheres to its guidelines and conducts a credible election. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, emphasized that they will resist any attempts to rig the election.
It’s worth noting that the Imo State government has denied any plans to rig the election. However, the PDP’s concerns highlight the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
