The United Nations has pledged $6 million to assist flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State, following the devastating overflow of the Alau Dam. The UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, made this announcement on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

In a joint mission over the weekend, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the Nigeria Red Cross Society visited Maiduguri to assess the situation. Fall revealed that many of the affected individuals had already been displaced several times due to ongoing conflict and insecurity in the region.

“We and our partners are providing hot meals and air-dropping food into hard-to-reach areas cut off by floodwaters. Additionally, we’re trucking in water and offering sanitation and hygiene services, including water purification tablets to prevent disease outbreaks,” Fall said.

He added that the UN is also distributing hygiene and dignity kits to women and girls, while providing emergency health and shelter services to those in need.
