The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has debunked media reports claiming that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is currently in their custody.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity for the EFCC, the anti-graft agency clarified that Bello has not been detained at any of its holding facilities, contrary to widespread speculation.
The statement emphasized that although Bello has not been apprehended, he remains a wanted individual due to ongoing allegations of financial misconduct. “The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody,”
Oyewale confirmed. “Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged ₦80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”
This clarification comes in the wake of growing public interest in the former governor’s case, as rumors swirled that he had been taken into custody. The allegations against Bello, involving one of the largest sums in money laundering cases linked to a Nigerian political figure, have placed him under intense scrutiny. He is facing multiple charges related to the mismanagement of public funds during his tenure as governor, with the EFCC determined to bring him to justice.
