President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Zamfara State following two tragic incidents: devastating floods in Gummi Local Government Area and a deadly boat accident that claimed the lives of over 40 farmers over the weekend. The farmers were en route to their farms when the accident occurred.

In an official statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu conveyed the deep sorrow felt by the federal government and the entire nation in the wake of these twin tragedies. “The thoughts and prayers of all Nigerians are with the families of the victims and the people of Zamfara during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Expressing his sympathy, President Tinubu promised that the federal government would provide support to the victims and their families. He emphasized that both natural and man-made disasters must be addressed with urgency, pledging that his administration would prioritize relief efforts to mitigate the suffering of those affected.

In response to the severity of the situation, Tinubu directed emergency response agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies, to carry out a comprehensive assessment of both the flooding and the boat accident. The assessment will focus not only on immediate relief needs but also on identifying the underlying causes of these disasters to prevent future occurrences.

“The President has ordered a thorough investigation into the root causes of these tragedies,” Onanuga’s statement continued. “We need to understand what led to the flooding and the boat accident so that we can take preventative measures in the future, especially as we continue to grapple with the effects of climate change and the increasing need for robust infrastructure.”

Additionally, President Tinubu tasked federal response agencies with collaborating closely with the Zamfara State Government to ensure the delivery of much-needed aid and support. He highlighted the importance of swift, coordinated action to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to those affected by the flooding, as well as psychological support for the families grieving the loss of loved ones in the boat accident.

Beyond immediate relief, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to long-term solutions for preventing future disasters of this nature. He noted that the government is taking steps to improve infrastructure and safety protocols, particularly in flood-prone areas and riverine communities where incidents like boat accidents are becoming more frequent.

“As a nation, we cannot afford to be reactive,” Tinubu stated. “We must strengthen our disaster preparedness and response systems, invest in the safety and resilience of our communities, and protect the lives and livelihoods of our citizens from avoidable tragedies.”
