Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed confidence that the Labour Party’s (LP) victory in the 2023 general elections can be repeated in the upcoming Edo State governorship election. Speaking during a rally in Edo State on Thursday, Otti emphasized the importance of strong voter participation and vigilance to secure a win for LP’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, in the September 21 election.
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Otti drew from his own experience in Abia State, where the Labour Party won a landmark victory in the 2023 elections. He called on Edo voters to replicate the same commitment and determination by coming out en masse to support Akpata. Otti underscored the need for people to remain steadfast at polling stations after casting their votes to ensure the electoral process is not compromised.
“This election will make a difference in Edo State. It is an election for the people, and it is your opportunity to choose a government that truly represents your interests,” Otti remarked. “When you vote, remain at your polling booth and do not leave. That is how we did it in Abia State. For 48 to 72 hours, nobody slept. We stayed vigilant, and that is what we need here in Edo.”
The governor reinforced his message by using an analogy familiar to his audience: “I used to tell our people, ‘The rat does not eat something when the owner is awake.’ You should not sleep when your votes are on the line. If it’s about the votes, we will have them; if it’s about winning, we will win. We cannot allow any rat to steal our victory.”
Otti’s remarks were met with enthusiastic applause, reflecting the growing momentum behind Akpata’s candidacy. The rally marked an important moment in the final push by the Labour Party to capture Edo State, following its nationwide surge in popularity during the last general elections.
In addition to urging vigilance, Otti highlighted the significance of the election as a turning point for Edo State, calling it a contest between the status quo and a new direction under Labour Party leadership. He noted that the Labour Party’s victory in Abia demonstrated that with a well-organized grassroots movement and committed supporters, it was possible to defeat entrenched political interests.
Akpata, who was present at the rally, also addressed the crowd, thanking Otti for his support and urging the people of Edo to stand strong. “This election is not just about me or the Labour Party—it’s about all of you. It’s about building a future where the government serves the people, not the other way around,” he said.
Akpata’s campaign has focused on addressing economic challenges, improving governance, and tackling corruption in the state. His message of transparency and accountability has resonated with many voters, particularly the youth, who see him as a fresh alternative to the traditional political elite.
