Pop icon Taylor Swift has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, expressing concerns about the potential for AI-generated misinformation to influence the upcoming election. Swift took to Instagram to share her endorsement, where she emphasised the need for transparency to combat the misuse of artificial intelligence.
Swift specifically cited a recent incident in which an AI-generated image of her falsely endorsing former President Donald Trump circulated online. “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Swift wrote. “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”
The fake endorsement is just one example of how AI technologies, such as deepfakes, can be weaponized to manipulate public opinion, a growing concern for public figures and lawmakers. Swift’s endorsement also comes amid broader debates over AI regulation, with policymakers and tech leaders calling for stronger safeguards against AI misuse.
Swift’s home state of Tennessee recently passed the Ensuring Likeness Image and Voice Security (ELVIS) Act, designed to protect artists from AI impersonation and deepfakes. Meanwhile, federal legislation remains in the works, with Vice President Harris leading efforts on AI policy. The Biden administration has established the *AI Safety Institute*, aimed at evaluating the safety of generative AI models, following an executive order last year.
Swift’s vocal stance highlights the growing intersection between technology, politics, and culture, signalling the need for further discussions on how to address AI’s potential dangers in the democratic process.
