The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken note of a viral video circulating on social media featuring a political statement made by an individual wearing a Spy Police uniform. The video, which centers on the upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State, has raised concerns about the involvement of police personnel in political affairs. In response, the NPF has issued a strong condemnation of the incident, clarifying that the individual involved is not a regular officer of the Nigeria Police Force but a Supernumerary (Spy) Police Officer employed by a private company.
The NPF emphasized that Supernumerary Police Officers, commonly referred to as Spy Police, are private individuals who receive specialized training from the police to carry out specific security functions for their employers. These officers are not integrated into the regular police payroll and do not take the oath of allegiance required of sworn officers. As a result, they maintain the right to express their political opinions and can belong to any political party of their choice. However, the NPF expressed disapproval of the officer’s use of the official Spy Police uniform while engaging in political commentary.
In light of the video, the individual involved has been arrested for further investigation. The NPF reiterated that his actions and political statements do not in any way represent the views or stance of the Nigeria Police. The Force assured the public of its unwavering commitment to neutrality, professionalism, and adherence to the rule of law, particularly during politically sensitive times such as election seasons.
Furthermore, the NPF has urged the public to disregard any politically charged statements made by individuals wearing Spy Police uniforms, stressing that these comments are not aligned with the institution’s values or mission.
