Kano Assembly Extends Tenure of Local Government Caretaker Chairmen

The Kano State House of Assembly has approved a two-month extension for the 44 local government caretaker chairmen, following a request from Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Local Government, Comrade Abdul Salam Gwarzo.

The extension, effective from September 9 to November 9, 2024, was necessitated by the expiration of the caretaker chairmen’s current tenure on September 8, 2024.

Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala explained that the law allows for interim caretakers to be appointed in the absence of elected leaders for up to three months, with possible extensions of two to three months.

Dala clarified that the caretaker chairmen will vacate their positions once newly elected local government chairmen are sworn in.

The extension comes amid uncertainty surrounding the local government elections, initially scheduled for October 26, 2024, which face legal challenges.

A Federal High Court in Abuja recently restrained the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from collecting nomination fees, pending a full hearing on September 25, 2024.

The Assembly’s decision ensures continuity in local governance in Kano despite the electoral uncertainties.
