The Imo State Police Command has apprehended five individuals suspected of cult-related activities during an intelligence-driven operation in Irete, Owerri West Local Government Area. The operation, which aimed to curb the rising cultism in the state, led to the arrest of Uche Ibejiako (26), Mariano Daniel (24), Michael Chukwuemeka (23), and Annointing Ezeh (23). The suspects, all believed to be members of the notorious Black Axe Confraternity, have confessed to their involvement with the group.

According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, the suspects are currently under investigation, with authorities working to gather further evidence of their criminal activities. Upon completion of the investigation, they will be formally charged in court.

In addition to the recent arrests, on July 27, 2024, the police also apprehended Chibueze Kalu, a 25-year-old suspected cultist, and confiscated a locally made pistol from him. Kalu admitted his membership in the same Black Axe Confraternity.

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, commended the community’s support and encouraged continued collaboration with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities, stressing that such partnerships are key to maintaining peace and security in the state.
