The Federal Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, with a recent operation by the Mining Marshals in Jaguna, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, successfully removing illegal gold miners who had repeatedly ignored orders to vacate the area.
On July 15, 2024, the Mining Marshals launched an initial raid at the site, arresting seven suspected illegal miners and instructing laborers to leave within five days.
Rather than comply, the illegal miners escalated their activities, bringing in more workers and armed security to defend the site. This defiance prompted a second clearance operation to restore order.
Despite numerous pleas from local traditional rulers for the illegal miners to vacate the area, allowing legitimate titleholders—who have been unable to access the site for over 16 years—to resume their operations, the miners remained.
Acting on intelligence reports, the Mining Marshals neutralized the armed resistance and secured the site for rightful operators.
ACC John Attah Onoja, Commander of the Mining Marshals, emphasized the government’s resolve to end illegal mining under the leadership of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake. “All illegal miners, no matter their backing, must cease operations or face severe legal consequences,” he warned.
This latest operation underscores the government’s determination to safeguard the mining sector, enhance investor confidence, and ensure that licensed operators can work without interference.
The Mining Marshals continue their mandate to protect the nation’s mineral resources and promote lawful mining practices.
